What we cover
We follow Russia's war against Ukraine and the policies, institutions and industries that shape security in Europe. Our main subjects are:
- Russia: its government, armed forces, economy and foreign policy;
- Ukraine: the war, the country's defence and the support of its partners;
- NATO and the defence policies of its members;
- the defence industry and arms production;
- sanctions and export controls, and how they are enforced or evaded;
- energy security;
- the wider security of Europe, from the Arctic and the Baltic to the Black Sea.
How our analysis is written
Most of what we publish is analysis: we bring together what is on the public record and explain what we think it means. Every piece is written so that you can check what it is based on.
- We cite our sources and link to them when they are available online, preferring primary material such as official documents and statements, court records and sanctions designations.
- We keep established facts apart from our assessment of them, and we say when we are drawing a conclusion.
- We say when information is uncertain or cannot be independently verified, such as battlefield claims or testimony given in captivity.
The full standards are set out in our editorial policy.
